Lamartine

Alphonse de Lamartine was born in Mâcon in 1790 and spent his childhood in Milly. The first love of his youth, Elvira, triggered off his vocation for writing. Throughout his life, Lamartine led a simultaneous outstanding career in writing and in politics.

He retired from politics in 1849, in debt and spent the rest of his life in the region of Mâcon, where he was born. He died in Paris in 1869 and is buried in Saint Point. His main works include Jocelyn, The Fall of an Angel, Graziella and Histoire des Girondins.

Chaumières où du foyer étincelait la flamme ;
