Old Saint-Vincent

Near Mâcon former oppidum, the two towers and the narthex from the Romanesque age are the only remains of the old Saint-Vincent Cathedral. Sold as a national property in 1799, it was abandoned to demolition contactors who destroy the Nave, the transept and the choir from the Gothic period.
The plans and the displayed architectural elements make it possible to reconstitute the architectural evolution of this building from the XIth to the XVth century and to have a vision of the width of the building still upright at the end of the XVIIIth century.
To note: the splendid primitive tympanum (beginning of XIIth century).
The narthex is opened to the visit from 01/06 to 30/09.

Saint-Clément’s archaeological site

The excavations of this parish church, unused since 1973, unearthed several dozens of sarcophagi and the foundations of a funerary church built in the VIth century, shortly after Mâcon rises to the rank of Episcopal city.
It is the only site of that time, visible in all South Burgundy. A visit-trail is made thanks to a system combining comments, musical background and play of lights.
